As
in most European countries, football (soccer) is a national obsession, even
though the pool of talent is small, limiting the possible success.
Having said this, the national team has grown in stature, achieving draws against such (relative) giants as the Republic of Ireland, and Portugal, and a famous victory against fellow minnows Luxembourg (albeit a larger country).
Nationally, all the Liechtenstein teams compete in the Swiss football leagues, with FC Vaduz being the most successful, and highest ranked. 2003-4 season saw a near miss in terms of promotion to the top league.
